A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship government projects.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify the reasons behind this tragedy,” declared the head of state.
The official reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the former leader, whose time in office concluded the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's developmental vision for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The development of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a significant increase of its duties in civilian projects. They were built at an rapid pace, defying predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised ongoing questions over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an earlier crash this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the catastrophe, the chief of a primary political opposition urged an prompt halt in the development and management of all similar projects.
This pause was requested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "requires swift accountability."
In reaction, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and operation of these national undertakings.
