European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the regulations are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.
