Nepal's Political Scene Sees Significant Alliance Forged Between Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant move ahead of next year's national polls, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the wake of large-scale and fatal youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Address Youth Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the issues raised by the younger generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which led to considerable loss of life.

"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.

The late summer revolt was triggered by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Details of the Fresh Political Agreement

According to the formal agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political class. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Political Consultations Underway

In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with several major political figures. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the uprising.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
