The English along with Wales Pitted in the Same Group for the 2027 World Cup in Australia

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The pool stage draw was conducted by rugby legends such as two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

The English side together with Wales will face off in the same group for the 2027 RWC, setting up a highly-anticipated early clash in the tournament Down Under. Completing the group in Pool F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and Zimbabwe.

This pairing recalls their famous meeting in the pool stages of the 2015 World Cup, where a Welsh win at Twickenham contributed to the hosts' shock group stage elimination.

Key Pool Draws

Ireland alongside the Scots have likewise been drawn in a group together, replicating the situation from the 2023 edition. On that occasion, they claimed a 36-14 win, with Scotland failing to progress to the quarter-finals.

Los Teros and Portugal, who each made a strong impression as underdogs in the last World Cup, round out that Pool D.

Notably, the victors of these two groups cannot meet defending champions and top-ranked South Africa until the final, assuming the South Africans win their own group.

Knockout Ramifications

If the groups conclude in line with the current global standings, further top favourites like New Zealand and Les Bleus would remain separated from both the English and the Irish all the way to the final.

Under those circumstances, Los Pumas would be the other top-ranked nation on the same half of the knockout draw as those northern hemisphere teams.

Tournament Hosts Draw Major Fixture

Tournament hosts Australia have been drawn alongside their trans-Tasman rivals and triple champions the All Blacks in Pool A.

Australia will open the World Cup in Perth on 1 October 2027 in a marquee fixture aimed at jump-start the event.

Elsewhere, holders the Springboks have drawn Italy, Georgia and the Oaks. France are grouped with Japan, future hosts the United States and Manu Samoa.

Larger Tournament for 2027

Los Pumas will take on Fiji, Spain and the Canadian team as the World Cup grows to 24 teams from the 20 who took part in France.

This edition will feature a last-16 stage for the very first time in Rugby World Cup history.

While the victor of Pool F may avoid some of the rugby's biggest beasts early on, they will meet the second-placed team from Pool B – most likely the Italians – in the first knockout round.

A total of four of the other six pool winners will face a third-placed side from the pool stages.
