Around fifty vehicles have been covered with what appears to be human blood in the German town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by police.

Cars, walls and postboxes were defaced, sometimes with swastikas, they stated in a release.

Officers report they were notified late on Wednesday evening, when a resident noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued fluid.

The substance had been drawn in the shape of a banned symbol, they reported.

Law enforcement then discovered multiple other smeared automobiles and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.

These symbols are illegal in Germany under regulations banning the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.

Police state preliminary tests indicate the liquid was probably human blood.

"There is still no clue as to its origin; authorities are currently not cognizant of any injuries in relation with the event," they added.

City officials announced they were trying "to resolve the mystery" and have appealed to the residents for information.

A senior official stated the vandalism left him speechless and needed to be solved rapidly.

"This event strikes at the core of Hanau and revives the wounds of the extremist attack half a decade ago," he posted on social media, mentioning the murder of nine people by a shooter targeting individuals of migrant background in five years prior.
